A New Idea: Partition
In 1930 Muhammad Iqbal, a Muslim poet from Lahore, gave a speech suggesting an independent India and a separate state for Muslims. He believed that Muslims needed protection from political, economic, and social discrimination by the Hindu majority. Mohammed Ali Jinnah, the leader of the All-India Muslim league political party, agreed with Iqbal's idea. Jinnah wanted British-controlled India to become two separate countries. The division of India into two nations is known as partition.
